We're a Big Family!

Here's a glimpse of the past week in the 4 hour class:

Big Blob was back!

The Grocery Store

Last week there was lots of interest in the cash register which prompted the teachers
to bring out the grocery store toys... Now I'm wondering if the children might be
interested in learning about money... the value of the various bills and coins perhaps...?

Adam fills his basket with fruits and vegetables

Even Batman did a little shopping!

Dominic checks out the light table

The children worked together to create a track to roll balls on

It went all over the classroom!

Even on the furniture!

I was informed by Domenic, that this was called "the vegetable carrot slide"

We also talked about the letter "A" at circle time

A list of "A" words we generated

Adam even incorporated it into his art!

We also talked about autumn...

...which lead to the children wanting to talk about Halloween costumes.
So naturally, we asked them:

"What are you going to be for Halloween?"

Dominic - Captain America
Weston - A fireman again
Justin - Ninja Turtles
Ella - Dora
Domenic - Spiderman
Adam - A spaceman from Safeway
Matthew - Spiderman? No. Batman? No. Minnie Mouse? Yes, Ok.
Ashton - Obi-Wan Kenobe
Mayu - I don't know.

Art

On Monday we put out a wide variety of things to paint with

Of course the children did alot of drawing too!

And on Friday we started a new, autumn-themed art project

Sandbox

Domenic and Weston found this truck...

...and Ashton found treasure!

Story Time at Brighouse Library

On Wednesday we went to story time - we heard some great stories,
sang some songs and everyone got to choose one book to bring back
to school with us for our book shelf. We also got to check out the
3D printer which was making all sorts of cool things!

Paulik Park

We were excited to get to see the pig that lives next to the park!

Domenic helped clean up

Mayu and Ella hiding under a tree

We took a few moments to look at the leaves

and watch them falling from the tree

Mayu and Ella put a few leaves through the grate

A New Park

We had to walk through this tree-tunnel to get to the new park

It was raining, and slippery, but we managed!

There were lots of cool new things to climb on

And swings!

As we were walking back to the bus everyone just started holding hands

And Ashton said:
"We're a big family!"

I think that this is a great example of how we are all settling into our school year together! We are all
feeling comfortable with each other already - a few of the children have even called the teachers
"mom" or "auntie" from time to time :)

And our family tree is growing! We have a new friend in class, and this coming week there will be another new friend joing us as well!!

Thanks to the whole family for yet another fabulous week!

Something Old, Something(s) New!

Once again the four hour class spent some time in the classroom using our old favourite toys:

 Mayu matched shapes

Weston made a colourful mosaic

And Domenic used the blocks to build "Darth Vader"

We also tried some new things this week:

Cooking Spring Rolls with Yvette

For more details, check out the bulletin board in the hallway!

Paulik Park
Having snack

Collecting sticks for art

Ashton found a hole where "a troll lives"

We did lots of climbing!

And sliding!

Dominic learned how to go down the spiral all by himself!

Walking back to the bus.

Big Blob

We made space mud and decided to call it "Big Blob"

 Putting the ingredients together

Mixing it all up

Playing!!!

Weston was "cutting up some peppers"

As you can imagine, Big Blob was a source of ALOT of comments and conversation.

How does it smell?
Ashton: Yummy! It smells like a cookie baking!

How does it feel?
Dominic: It's flat and gooey. It feels good!
Justin: Gooey - AH! Gooey - AH! It's cold!
Dominic: It's really gross - it's like pizza.

What are you making?
Ashton: a drum
Dominic: a blueprint
Justin: a handprint and a bouncy ball
Adam: strawberry, salty bread

The Turf Field and the Gym

It was raining quite a bit on Friday so we decided to stay at West -
That didn't stop us from getting our exercise!

Running

Bear walks

Riding bikes in the gym

Some New Toys

The cash register

Foam stacking

A Bug puzzle

The Lego Table

And the children did alot of art - we opened a free art table:

But they were more interested in drawing Ninja Turtles:

Justin is drawing Michaelangelo

Ashton drew Leonardo - with his swords

Justin also drew Leonardo

And Domenic drew Michaelangelo eating a banana

This is Justin's finished collection which includes all four turtles and Shredder!

What an wonderful, eventful week! I am excited to find out what the next week has in store for us!

Thanks everyone,
Nicole

FRIENDSHIP AND SPACE MUD

Hello everyone we are looking forward to an exciting year with our returning and new families. We began our morning circle talking about friends. Here are some of the children’s answers from our 4 year old class that we would like to share with you.

Taya: Butterflies have friends they have butterfly friends.
Lily: Friends are people.
Aleah: I like friends, I like playing with Lily.
Ava: I like the boy Matthew, he is my friend cause I need him.
Mia: Lily is my friend.
Chelsea: My mom and sister are my friends.
Chloe: Aldera is my best friend, he gives me the most beautiful things like chocolate.   Tiffany: I play with my mom and dad.
Cade: I play with my brother and Jess and Barbi at school.
Anthony: Jess is my friend. I like playing with Aleah and Cade.
Ryleigh: Lily plays with me, we play groceries and cars sometimes. I play with Cade.
Matthew: My friend is my mom and my dog named Oreo.

During freeplay we watched friendship and teamwork develop as children rolled balls down the track they had built together.

Instead of playdough, we decided to use space mud. As most children are use to playdough, this was a new and fun experience for many.

Cade, Kai, and Lily are having a discussion about what space mud is and how it feels.

Let The Games Begin!

Hello Everyone! Welcome to the 4 hour class blog!!

Here are some pictures from our first week of class:

Name tags (and pictures) were painted.

We had our first circle time.

And played with lots of different toys!

Grilling food in the camping area

Matching, pegs, shapes and sorting

Blocks

 Magnets

Logs

Ella and Mayu drew some pictures

Adam loved looking at the magazines!
I heard him tell Ella: "I'm not really reading, I'm just looking at the pictures"

We spent lots of time outside!

At the playground

Weston did the fire pole

Justin on the spiral slide

In the sandbox

And we went on our first field trip to Terra Nova!
The teachers were all very impressed at how well
everyone was listening and staying together!

Checking out the stove near the sharing garden

Checking out the new playground equipment

 Going down the slide

Playing with leaves

And walking...

...we did quite a bit of walking.  The children were tough and carried their own bags as they built their leg muscles! We were all pretty tired by the time we got back to the bus!

Thanks for a wonderful first week,

Nicole

A New Beginning

Although Preschool does not officially start until next week, all the teachers have been coming in early and getting everything ready.  New supplies and toys have been delivered and the classrooms are looking amazing.  We can not wait until next week to see all your little faces, old and new, big and small.
The Preschool blog portion will look a little different this year.  All the teachers will be contributing, therefore, you will be able to read and see pictures of some of the things that happen in our classrooms.  I encourage all our parents to comment on our posts.  We look forward to sharing a piece of our Merry King Preschool life with all of you.
