Big Buddies Visit - FAS M/W/F AM Class
March 7, 2018, 06:30 AM
Last week our morning class had their
second visit with our big buddies from Gilmore Elementary. This time they
hosted us at their school for a fun-filled morning.
Our day began in the library where two students picked a story to read aloud to the group. Our children were so engaged in the story that Deanna and I discussed bringing the students back to Merry King for a daily story telling.
They did an amazing job capturing our children’s attention and drawing them into the magical story.
Next, Mrs. McCarthy planned an activity for the kids to work on together. The big buddies were to trace the little buddy’s bodies on a piece of paper and then draw their outfits on the paper as accurately as possible. This seemed like a daunting task at first however the end result was so special. We hung the finished products up in the hallway outside our classroom if you wanted to have a look for yourself.
We then headed to the gym for a quick snack and then free play. This part of the morning was really fun for Deanna, Brianne and I to sit back and watch. The big buddies really took on a nurturing role with our children to make sure that they were cared for and having a good time.
At the beginning of the day some of our students were a tad shy around the somewhat new faces so it was so amazing to see them come out of their shells and embrace the new friendships that they created.
We can’t wait for our next adventure with our big buddies in April.
Until then

Our Valentines Exchange - 4 Year Old Class
March 5, 2018, 06:00 AM
We decided we would have an imagination market of materials we had
collected over the year like paper towel rolls, stones, egg carton sticks
etc.
The children then selected materials
they would like to use to make their valentines card/gift. It was hard to wait a turn to visit the imagination market! Some of the
children decided to sit close and watch until it was their turn to pick from the
imagination market. While the children were waiting they began talking among
themselves about what they were going to make. Charlie said he was going to be
making a robot.
On the day of the exchange children brought their cards/gifts they made at home. The children put their cards/gifts into a basket which we then exchanged by each child picking one on the first turn and two on the second turn. As the basket went around and children picked from it some of the children would recognize the card/gift they had made and proudly shouted out that they had made that one, which then began conversations as to how the card/gift was made.
We completed the morning with a Valentine party and volunteering at the bake sale where we had done some baking for the Variety Children’s Charity.
Until next time.

Ruler Painting - 4 Year Old Class
February 27, 2018, 06:00 AMThe children seemed to thoroughly enjoy “ruler” painting in our
Four-Year-Old Class recently. Each child visited the art table this day, with
some children creating as many as four art pieces.
Each child chose their own base colour.
Next, a ruler is gently pulled down the paper. A very simple process with a vibrant effect.
The paper was then dotted with one colour at a time.

Frozen Puddles - 4 Hour Class
February 23, 2018, 06:30 AM
When we went to King George Park, the
children enjoyed playing in the snowy playground. While running around, Jerome,
Koen and Fraser noticed the ice on the ground and were intrigued by it. They
came closer to look at it and Koen said “this is a big piece of ice”. Fraser
started to walk on it and realized that it was very slippery. He almost fell
but caught himself. Fraser said “this feels like skating”. Jerome was
determined to look for small pieces of ice on the ground.
Jerome found a small enough piece of ice
that he could carry and threw it across the ice. He saw how the ice turned into
smaller pieces and it just slid across the frozen puddle. Jerome said “the big
ice no break”.
Fraser and Koen both enjoyed walking on the
ice. Koen said, “it feels like your feet are sliding”.
The children enjoyed exploring the ice.
They were intrigued by how water turns to ice and vice versa. This will be a
topic that we will be exploring in the coming week.
Koen and Fraser wanted to break the ice and
see if there was water under the ice. Koen started stomping on the ice. The ice
started to crack and eventually broke. There was still water under the ice.
Until next time,

Food Fun at Freshii - FAS T/Th Class
February 21, 2018, 06:30 AMLast week our preschool class had
the opportunity to enjoy a “walking field trip” to the Freshii restaurant at
Seafair Mall.
We all got to see avocados chopped and soaked as well as lunch bowls compiled for consumption. As the children watched, their questions and comments were enthusiastically welcomed by Renite and her staff. The children also got to see a salad constructed…some of them even got to shake the ingredients!!!
Sincerely,
We, as educators, were so grateful
for the dry, sunny weather and the willing parent volunteers who assisted us in
our safe arrival each way! Thanks so
much!
When we arrived at the restaurant,
the children were greeted with a friendly hello and a hug from Renite, the
owner of this establishment. It was
wonderful to feel so welcome in this environment!
Once we all settled in, the children
were split into two groups and invited to visit the kitchen in the back where
food preparation is done. Each child
washed and dried their hands and received a hair net to wear before the
demonstration began. We all got to see avocados chopped and soaked as well as lunch bowls compiled for consumption. As the children watched, their questions and comments were enthusiastically welcomed by Renite and her staff. The children also got to see a salad constructed…some of them even got to shake the ingredients!!!
When these delicious teriyaki bowls
were completed the children got to sit at tables in the restaurant and consume
the prepared products. Many children
could be heard making comments, such as “Mmmmm!” or “more rice please!” You could visibly see and hear how much they
were enjoying this experience!
After this part of the field trip
finished, the children were invited to line up behind the counter once
again. Each child was offered a cup of
frozen yogurt with a fresh fruit topping, which they enjoyed immensely! Parents and teachers were also provided with
this tasty treat!
Once everyone was done eating, we
said our farewells and started our walk back to West Richmond. When we arrived at the classroom there was a
short amount of time to play before we gathered in a farewell circle to discuss
the field trip experience. When the
group was questioned about their favorite part of the day, some children said
“the yogurt” and many children said “everything!”
As educators, we truly appreciate
the willingness of our local Freshii establishment to allow the children of our
preschool class to enter their work environment and have such a positive
multi-sensory eating experience!
Overall, this was a wonderful day in
every way! We are very grateful for the
positive behavior of your children as we corporately engaged in this event!Sincerely,
Teacher
