Sr. OSC Hunger Games

Hi Everybody!
With the New Year well under way the staff here at Sr. OSC are constantly revising and tweaking programs and activities so that the kids can get the most out of them. Recently we have been telling the children that we were going to do more group activities and games in the gym as opposed to simply doing free-play. The kids responded in kind by deciding that they wanted to play a group game in the gym called The Hunger Games!
Don't worry parents, these weren't the Hunger Games to which Katniss is all too familiar – it is actually a modified version of a game we like to play in the gym called Cross the Canyon.
The game is simple: SURVIVE! All the kids start at one end of the gym and must run, duck, dip and dodge balls thrown at them from leaders on the sidelines as they try to get to the other side safely. There are plenty of mats, makeshift shelters and obstacles that the kids can use for temporary safety from the dodgeballs as they try and survive each day (or round) of the Games. However, unlike like the real Hunger Games, getting out doesn't mean you have to stay out indefinitely! In fact, the beauty of this game is that if a player (or Tribute) is hit with a dodgeball they can now join their fellow fallen comrades on the sidelines and throw dodgeballs at the players still in the game!
The Hunger Games end when there is but one lone survivor! But as we well know from the books and films, the end of one Hunger Games means that another is inevitable, and so the Games must go on!
Here's a picture of the arena

A Tribute showing his skills during The Hunger Games – But will he win?
The best part of the activity was the fact that the kids initiated it themselves and had a blast doing so!
Have a great week and may the odds be ever in your favour!
