Melting Pumpkins

The idea of taking a small white pumpkin, adding crayons and fusing them together, resulted in some over the top creations over the last week at Sr. OSC. Inspired by a simple idea we saw online we went to our local pumpkin patch to find the perfect pumpkins and to borrow a much needed heat gun to experiment with.

The kids at Sr. OSC started off the activity by hot gluing crayons to their pumpkin. Some chose to use large pieces of crayon scattered around the top of their pumpkin, while other meticulously placed small pieces of crayons around the sides of their pumpkin to try a different look. Each pumpkin had a different flair and to be honest the biggest hit was the puddle of crayon at the bottom of the pan that had melted together after the experiment was complete. Take the time and to check out the video below to see how it all went down and what took place that crazy day.

Just a side note all pumpkin melting was done by a supervised and experienced leader, none of which were beyond excited to actually experiment with such a cool piece of equipment. The smiles and astonishment on the leader's... I mean kids faces were well worth the time spent on such a cool task.

Build It Day at Senior OSC!

Look at the airplane start to take shape!

CUPCAKE!
Last Friday was Senior OSC's first In-Day of the school year and we started off with a big bang; or at least a big mess!  Everyone spent the morning digging into our GIANT pile of cardboard boxes to build whatever their imagination could create. Soon the gym was filling up with cars, planes, doghouses, rocket ships, and more.  There was even a giant cupcake!

After lunch we prepared for Home Depot's visit. Everyone was super excited to see what they would bring for us to build.  Soon Josh, Nick and his team from Home Depot had set up 45 hammers and goggles. 45 OSC children sat eagerly in their orange Home Depot aprons while Josh gave a brief explanation of the project; a fire department airplane.

There were lot's of instructions to follow
when it came to constructing a plane.
Finally he told everyone to open their kits and   have at it.  Soon the room was filled with the banging of 45 hammers and the occasional "where's my wheels", or "I think my plane is upside down." Despite some of the set backs, little planes were taking shape all over the multi-purpose room.  Once everyone was finished and cleaned up we said our thank you's and good byes to Josh and his Home Depot team.  For the rest of the afternoon we saw some very creative play with the new toys everyone had built!

Take a look at some of our creations from an exciting Built It                                                                   Day!!!!

They had so much fun and the weather was absolutely perfect. It was so nice to see the kids running around looking for that perfect pumpkin. I hope they all had fun. Enjoy these pictures and on behalf of the Junior and Senior OSC staff, have a fun and safe Halloween!

Recreation of Quidditch (Muggle Version)

Last year, West Richmond Senior Out-of-School Care Program brought you the mysterious and adventurous Space Odyssey with our leaders in their customized space suits exploring the final frontier of the human race.

This year, we wanted to bring our kids something special and different. We wanted to give our kids something that has never been tried before, and something that has only been seen in the movies.
Inspired by the magic world of Hogwarts, and the fictional series of Harry Potter, we organized a game of Quidditch, a magical sport in the enchanting realm of Harry Potter to our program.

Instead of using the Quaffle, the Bludgers, and the Broomsticks, we substituted volleyballs, dodge balls, and hockey sticks as our equipments. And the Snitch, we asked a leader to be our volunteer.
On Thursday, October 17th, Stuart and I tried to recreate the most competitive and exciting game of Quidditch from Hogwarts as our joint activity in our Sr. OSC program. The misty and foggy weather added an element of mystery and made it feel as though we were actually playing in Hogwarts.

Since we did not have magic power’s to fly with our broomsticks into the sky, this Quidditch game was as “Muggle” as it can be…  However, it was still extremely enjoyable and exciting when the game began…
