Duct Tape Madness
07-02-2014, 05:40 PM
Today at OSC, many of the kids
participated in making duct tape wallets.
Though this is not a new activity, it seems to attract them every time. We had a variety of colours for the kids to
choose from, including neon’s like pink, green, and orange, and patterns like
gummy bears, skateboards and tie-dye! It
was so interesting to see what the kids came up with. I gave them some instruction as how to start
off the shape using construction paper, but after that creative freedom was
left to them.
We had a few traditional wallets,
with a regular money slot and card slots, but then we had one wallet where the
card slots went horizontal instead of vertical and left room for a “duct tape
I.D.”! There were also a few pouches
made as well. One was made specifically
to hold the child’s wallet, and the other was going to be used to hold small stuff
animals. The one meant for stuffed animals
even had a duct tape bow on it. It was
so neat to see the different personalities come through the children’s choices
of colours, patterns and styles of wallets.
It was especially neat to ask what they would use them for (ex. the
stuffed animals). Check below for some of the wallets that I thought really
turned out.
Until next time!

Sr. OSC Hunger Games
07-02-2014, 05:21 PM
Hi Everybody!
With the New Year well under way the staff here at Sr. OSC are constantly revising and tweaking programs and activities so that the kids can get the most out of them. Recently we have been telling the children that we were going to do more group activities and games in the gym as opposed to simply doing free-play. The kids responded in kind by deciding that they wanted to play a group game in the gym called The Hunger Games!
Don't worry parents, these weren't the Hunger Games to which Katniss is all too familiar – it is actually a modified version of a game we like to play in the gym called Cross the Canyon.
The game is simple: SURVIVE! All the kids start at one end of the gym and must run, duck, dip and dodge balls thrown at them from leaders on the sidelines as they try to get to the other side safely. There are plenty of mats, makeshift shelters and obstacles that the kids can use for temporary safety from the dodgeballs as they try and survive each day (or round) of the Games. However, unlike like the real Hunger Games, getting out doesn't mean you have to stay out indefinitely! In fact, the beauty of this game is that if a player (or Tribute) is hit with a dodgeball they can now join their fellow fallen comrades on the sidelines and throw dodgeballs at the players still in the game!
The Hunger Games end when there is but one lone survivor! But as we well know from the books and films, the end of one Hunger Games means that another is inevitable, and so the Games must go on!
Here's a picture of the arena
A Tribute showing his skills during The Hunger Games – But will he win?
The best part of the activity was the fact that the kids initiated it themselves and had a blast doing so!
Have a great week and may the odds be ever in your favour!

Battle for Air Hockey Supremacy!
27-01-2014, 04:55 PM
The newest craze at Sr. OSC does not involve; dragons,
rubber bands, magic or fictional characters from another world, instead the
newest fancy for the kid’s consists of 2 paddles, a plastic puck, and a bit of
air. Introduced this week, thanks to a generous donation by Kylie, the kids
have been having a blast battling it out on our newest hand me down air hockey
table. Having sat in a dungy garage for the past couple years Kylie offered Sr.
OSC a chance to inherit a nostalgic activity quite popular from what I remember
as a kid.
Since making its way into Sr. OSC the kids have had numerous
run ins with errant pucks from speedy shots, a couple of sore fingers for their
troubles and of course the on-going challenge of how to score when an opponent
refuses to move their paddle anywhere beyond their goal’s edge. It takes time
but once the game starts there is no stopping the puck; those who take risk or
take a slower more subtle approach to the game often win the battles. No matter
what the level of competitiveness or skill level may be the kids are having a
blast, going back and forth against one another while remaining true to the
game.
What more can you ask for when all you need is a couple
paddles, a puck, and a board of air.

Jason
Oh My, What a Busy January It has Been!

Hello Readers,
I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas and
New Year’s!
It seems the Juniors and Seniors alike are all very pleased
with their Christmas hauls! Some have come back tanned and jet lagged, others
still have copious amounts of chocolate to indulge in. Yet all of them are
beaming with a smile that shows they will never forget the memories made with
their families both at home and abroad.
This past week at Senior OSC there has been some exciting
competition stretching from the gym all the way to the foosball tables. We
could play “2 Ball” into the wee hours of the next morning if all the parents
decided not to show up, yes, it’s that popular. Some great sportsmanship was
demonstrated in the foosball tournament as well!
There was a “constructing a tower with newspaper” activity
as well. What started out with 3 builders quickly turned to 6 and the kids
quickly realized that more hands and ideas meant less work because they could
operate as a team. With some ingenuity and great delegation they created a
tower taller than me, and a sculpture even Michelangelo could appreciate!
I will be running a Music Club at Senior OSC starting on
Monday January 27th and I would be stoked to see a good turn out! So
if you know your child is looking for a creative outlet or some extra practice
time on their instrument please encourage them to bring their musical weapon
and join me for jam! We’ll sing, we’ll collaborate and most of all, we’ll have
fun!
Thanks, and Take Care!
James
Back to the Routine!

Greetings families and friends!
It’s time to get back into the groove of things as the
winter break ends. I hope everybody had an amazing past two weeks and lots of
time spent with your family. The winter
break always comes at such a great time for the children who are starting to
feel overwhelmed by school.
We started the break with a lot of snow that lasted for a
couple of days before school ended. As a child, I always
enjoyed the snowfall and never minded the cold that came with it. Hopefully
everybody stayed safe out there with the slippery road conditions, as it was
rather chaotic on the roads. Although the snow lasted only a couple days in
Richmond, we still had decent weather considering the predictable rainy Lower
Mainland weather. Remember to keep your children and yourself bundled up as
this cold weather stays with us for the next couple of months.
We tried to help the young minds active by having some games
during our in days. We had several games including Jeopardy during our
Christmas Eve In day. The questions we used were winter themed, which included
animals and Christmas.
The first week back to school is always a little tough for
the children to get used to. It will not be long until everybody gets back into
the groove of things. It is always nice to take a break but do not forget to
work just as hard as you play.
I hope everybody enjoyed the holidays and had a great New
Year!
Best wishes,
Sonny
