Halloween Week

It was Halloween week at Senior OSC and things were
getting spooky. There were spider webs on the walls, ghoulish creatures hanging
from the ceiling and most frightening of all, the room down the hall had
rumors of being haunted.
Finally, it was the day before Halloween and everyone
looked amazing in their costumes. The rumors of the haunted room had spread
over to the junior program and many of the juniors were excited to see what the
haunted room had in store.
Cole, Adrian and Alden were holding tours but no one had
seen Tyler, Felipe, Bryce, Liam or Rhyann all day.
They had been the first to discover the haunted room. It was all very
peculiar.
In the tour, you had the choice to have the lights on or
off. Lights off was not for the faint of
heart. Throughout the tour you heard
creepy music, saw glow in the dark paint and followed a red flashlight. Every
now and again you would sense someone lurking behind you, and distant screams
would send chills down your spine.
Luckily, if you needed to, there was a safe word you could say to end
the haunted house if things got too spooky.
Meanwhile there were some great crafts taking place in in the Multi. Ryan led a marshmallow pop activity, making scary but tasty treats and Brianna led festive crafts that encouraged spooky creativity.
Senior OSC had a wonderful Halloween week and we hope
that everyone had a fun and safe Halloween.

Halloween Decorations

Hey everyone,
With Halloween around the corner, (can you
believe it?) it’s time to start thinking about decorations! This week, we made Halloween
characters and cobwebs! We decided to make monsters and witches, so we began
by cutting out squares of cardboard, then gluing popsicle sticks over top. We
then used felt, tissue paper, and markers to create their faces.
After finishing our Halloween characters, the
kids chose to make some cobwebs and ghosts! Keira tied popsicle sticks together
in an X, and then wrapped coloured string around them. She plans to hang them
from the ceiling and maybe cause a few scares! Anette worked on “The Ghost of Sungod Pool”; a very timely
creation as this was our most recent out trip!
Once the Halloween decorations were complete,
the kids wanted to further their artistic ideas using felt. Sean and Anette
began working on small, very cozy sleeping bags, while Livia, Emilia, and Keira
made lovely purses with buttons on them!
While we were preparing for Halloween, Ryan and
Monica were busy with origami and teaching the kids how to make flying cranes
among many other designs!
We have such a wonderfully creative bunch and
it is always exciting to see what they create!

Lantern Festival 2015

Lantern Festival 2015!
On a beautiful evening in early October,
In and around the community centre,
Families gathered for an evening of fun,
Games and activities for everyone!
Donations were made
For the Richmond Food Bank
Some got Balloons,
and others, Face Paint!
Some people went Bowling,
and drums were played,
shadows,
wishes,
and lanterns were made!
Nigel rode in
And we all stopped to stare,
As he contact juggled
In the cool night air!
Then it was time,
The lanterns were lit,
we went on parade
The night was a hit!
To all those who took part and volunteers too,
For such a great evening,
we'd like to THANK YOU!!!

Colouring is Cool!

An old fad
has returned to OSC... 
These days the tables are crowded by kids (and leaders)
doing some good old fashioned colouring. Sharpies and paper are popping up
everywhere, both while hanging out inside and heading outside to enjoy the last of the autumn
sunshine. The preference has been for intricate drawings that take hours to
complete; therefore we are seeing kids return to the same page, day after day,
in order to complete these masterpieces.
Once it was clear the interest in
colouring was not fading away, leader Carolyn had an awesome idea to bind the pages
into individual colouring books. Overall, we have been impressed with how much
focus has been put into this great stress-relieving activity.

Leaf Attack!

The other day, our
group had the opportunity to participate in a similar experience.
Tatiana,
one of our leaders, has always wanted to
do an “art attack” type of afternoon activity with the kids, where little
pieces of art could come together to cohesively make a large picture. With the
changing of seasons and leaves falling, she thought it would be fun to do a
fall themed “Leaf Attack” with the kids, which entails collecting leaves and
painting them onto a large blank canvas to make a giant mural.
With a mission
in mind, Tatiana, along with a small group of budding artists (which consists
of Annette, Livia, and Keira). The girls took their time to gather different
types and shapes of leaves. Then, as a group, they decided on a larger image
they wanted to create. They wanted to create an image of a sunset with the word “OSC” in
it. Afterwards, they painted and stamped the leaves on. The girls had a ton of
fun seeing the intricate parts come together to form a large picture. Check out
their awesome artwork!
