Making Stuffing for Thanksgiving & Lanterns for our Upcoming Festival - 4 Year Old Class

I began by talking a little about Thanksgiving in our morning circle and some of the children spoke about what was on the snack table, which we had set up as a cooking table. I then explained that we are going to do some cooking today. Some of the children were excited to get started and others not so much, I would guess the concern of some of the children was if they had to eat it. I of course assured them, it was for them to share with families for Thanksgiving dinner.

Ruka and Taylor are using scissors to cut up celery

Katlyin mixes the apples and celery together and we get ready for cooking the mixture

Charlie adds cranberries to our stuffing mix.

The children comment on the yummy smell in the Classroom
and are ready to taste the stuffing.

The children attach their Thanksgiving message that was shared
during morning circle.

The children have begun making lanterns for our upcoming Lantern Festival!

Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving!

Until next post

Autumn Leaves - 4 Year Old Class

The children enjoyed using watercolours on starched felt. The outline of various leaves were drawn with permanent marker, preventing the outline from running. The water colours however, seeped and absorbed into each other, giving the leaves the look of beautiful Autumn colours.

Charlie – The water is turning coca cola colour.
The leaves are changing because the temperature is different.

Taylor – The leaves are changing colour because it's Fall and they fall down.

Jean – I like the cold day, but not in my nose.

Isabelle – The leaves bring cold.
Diego – The sponge feels good.
Arianna – There's green, orange, yellow, red and there's brown, then it will fall down.

Happy Autumn!!

Making Cranberry Sauce - FAS M/W/F AM

In light of Thanksgiving, we made Cranberry Sauce in class to share with the family.

Here are the step-by-step instructions for our cranberry sauce:

First, we measured 2 cups of sugar. We melted the sugar and 2 cups of water in a pot.

We waited for the sugar and water to melt and boil.

Then, we added 6 cups of cranberries into the pot.

We then needed to wait patiently until we heard the cranberries “popping” in the pot.

We then mashed the cranberries. Thereafter, we turned off the stove and let the sauce cool.

As it was cooling, we juiced an orange to add some citrus flavour to our sauce. We learned that we first needed to cut the orange in half. Then, we used the orange juicer to extract the juice. We needed to push and turn the orange until we got all the juice out.

Added the juice to the cranberry sauce.

Voilà! Delicious Cranberry Sauce ready for the special day.

We hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Color Exploration (Fine Arts & Science T/Th class)

Last month in our class, we talked about colors. At the art table, I gave the children a chance to explore and mix colors with paint. We painted with corks and with only the primary colors- red, blue and yellow. I intentionally put out the three colors to see how the children will create and paint with them. At the start of the activity, the children were fascinated in making “big dots” on their paper. They got one color at a time and made sure that the “big dots” were not touching each other.

Alessandria started to put one color on top of each other and discovered new colors. She started to see some green and dark dark dark orange.

Sabrina used the blue and red at the same time. She kept mixing the colors until she was satisfied with the purple that she made.

Sarah dipped one cork in all the colors. She was ecstatic in saying “ I made a rainbow color! I see red, orange, yellow, green, purple and blue in one dot!”

This activity made me remember that as an educator it is important to set-up activities and provide materials that will allow children to create new discoveries for themselves. The children taking the lead in their learning as we support and scaffold them.
Watch out for my next blog, as we discover the colors of fall.

Until next time,
Patricia

I See A Rainbow (4 Hour Class)

For the past couple of weeks, the children have been participating in what we call “Color of the Day”. One color is assigned to each day and they look for things around their environment that match the color. When an object is found we take a picture of it for documentation. The children were quite excited when they found an object that matches the color of the day. Here are some of the things that they found:
RED

ORANGE

YELLOW

GREEN

 BLUE

 PURPLE

When we were done with all the colors, the colors of the rainbow were brought to the art table. The children were provided with red, orange, yellow, green and purple paint. They painted with some old gift cards. The gift cards were used to spread paint on the paper.

Georgia was very careful in following the order of the colors of the rainbow.

Nathan only used his favorite colors in making his own rainbow.

Adonis mixed a lot of colors on one gift card so he could make a rainbow with one swipe of the gift card on his paper.

Sofia made sure that the colors of her rainbow did not overlap with each other.

Here are some of our finished “rainbow” paintings.

Come check out our bulletin board outside our classroom to see more pictures and paintings.

Until next time,
Patricia
