Grade 2 Integration Has Begun!

Since the middle of February the Grade 2’s from Junior Out of School Care have been coming to Senior Out of School Care at Gilmore, and it has been a blast! Although the thought of being a small fish in a big pond can be intimidating, our Grade 2’s are getting to know the staff and learning our routines very quickly, which will make the full-time transition much smoother once September rolls around. It’s a new experience for our grade 2’s, and I asked them what they liked most about coming to Senior Out of School Care.

Here are some of the responses:

Rowan: The Park!!
Adam: Definitely the park.
Peton: I love getting to play and run around my own school. I run faster at Gilmore than at West Richmond!
Alden: I like to be around my brother. And hockey.
Cole: I like having a rest from my sister!
Joanna: I love doing art it’s the best!

The Grade 2’s will get an extended chance to hang around the kids and staff at Senior Out of School Care, as they will be joining us for two weeks during Spring Break.

Take care,

Are You Ready for the Spring to Come?

After few weeks of snow and rain, we finally got some beautiful sunshine all week long! Since it is the last week before the long awaited Spring Break, let us take a look of what has happened during this exciting week.

Our 2014 pool tournament took place on Tuesday and Friday. This annual pool tournament is entering its third year at Senior OSC and it has attracted 19 players to participate this year, making this year’s tournament more competitive than ever!

In every sports game, there will be a winner and a loser but our kids were not discouraged or disappointed by the results of their game. A player even told me, “It doesn’t really matter that I lost. I am already having fun!” after suffering an upsetting lost in a playoff elimination game.

Another one of our players told me, “It’s sad that I lost my game but I did make a new friend,” since he had never played his opponent before the tournament paired them with each other.  They have gained new found respect and friendships with each other over a thrilling game of pool.

The championship game will be held after Spring Break. If you are interested in who will be playing in the finals, please come by and check the pool tournament board. All the games logs, stats, and standing are posted next to the Pirate Ship.

In the gym, Kylie brought the card game Werewolf” and introduced it to the kids. The game has quickly caught the attention of the kids and has created a new hype of “Werewolf “at OSC. The next time you have a chance to visit, don't hesitate to join a round of werewolf with us, but beware of the Werewolf attack!

"Night time" passes during a game of Werewolf!

Finally, in the park, we finally had a chance to enjoy the sunshine and the cool breeze of Spring.  The kids at OSC seem energized by the nice weather and have been venturing to the park and getting their daily dose of fresh air. The good news is the park will be open throughout the Spring and over the course of Summer.

Next week, Spring Break will be here. This year, we have prepared a series of electrifying out-trips, for example, “Fly Over Canada” the 4D movie and Burnaby Heritage Museum, to join in on a Scavenger Hunt . Not only that, our talented OSC leaders have organized several exciting in-days, like Magic day and Mystery day for our kids to experience.

Aren’t you excited the Spring to come? If you don’t have time to come by and check things out feel free to check our blog to see our out-trip and event photos we will continue to post through Spring Break!

Cheers,

Dennis

Let It Snow!!!

As the weather continues to surprise us by blowing in more snow from Sunday, the kids become ever more excited. As we all gear up for this snowy surprise we think what snow means to us over here at Sr. OSC: sleds, snowballs, snowmen, snow forts and anything else their minds can come up with. Arriving from school, the children and staff get ready for the hours of fun with our snow pants on and mittens in hand, for our fluffy white friends outside only visits us a few times a year. All the kids want to do is enjoy the snowy goodness to its best and hope that it stays for a little while longer.

Duct Tape Madness

Today at OSC, many of the kids participated in making duct tape wallets.  Though this is not a new activity, it seems to attract them every time.  We had a variety of colours for the kids to choose from, including neon’s like pink, green, and orange, and patterns like gummy bears, skateboards and tie-dye!  It was so interesting to see what the kids came up with.  I gave them some instruction as how to start off the shape using construction paper, but after that creative freedom was left to them.

We had a few traditional wallets, with a regular money slot and card slots, but then we had one wallet where the card slots went horizontal instead of vertical and left room for a “duct tape I.D.”!  There were also a few pouches made as well.  One was made specifically to hold the child’s wallet, and the other was going to be used to hold small stuff animals.  The one meant for stuffed animals even had a duct tape bow on it.  It was so neat to see the different personalities come through the children’s choices of colours, patterns and styles of wallets.  It was especially neat to ask what they would use them for (ex. the stuffed animals). Check below for some of the wallets that I thought really turned out.

Until next time!

Katie
