Happy New Year!

Welcome back to regular school schedules families, though some of our schedules aren’t so regular. Some changes to staff schedules that you’ll see in the up coming days are as follows: Dustin returns to programs as Gina is back in the office, Ryan M. is taking over Mondays at junior, and I, Katie, will be between both the junior and senior programs until the end of the school year. Gemma will also continue to be a familiar face at senior.

With my first shift in the New Year being at senior, I had the pleasure of catching up on some things that I’ve missed out on over the past year – such as the colouring book challenge. Back in October, Carolyn put together her favourite pictures from various adult colouring books and made mini ones for the kids at senior. After distributing the colouring books, Carolyn challenged the seniors to finish the entire book. Today, Jojo, also known as Joanna, or Jojo Bean, completed this challenge by finishing her book. To mark this glorious occasion, I interviewed the young artist about her favourite pieces from her book.

Katie: Joanna, what is your favourite picture?

Joanna: The heron.

Katie: Do you have a name for this piece?

Joanna: Harry.

Katie: Why is this one your favourite?

Joanna: It’s very colourful and I’ve been working on it for five days.

Katie: Joanna, you’ve also chosen to display your jellyfish picture, why is that?

Joanna: I chose it because it was the first one that I coloured.

Katie: What made you choose to colour this one first?

Joanna: It looks realistic and I thought it would be easy to colour.

Katie: Was the heron harder than the jellyfish?

Joanna: Yes.

Katie: What made the heron harder?

Joanna: The feathers, because they were different kinds of colours mixed together.

Katie: Anything else that you’d like to say about your colouring book?

Joanna: I also like the aquarium picture, because I like the seaweed and coral and there are hidden things in there, so I really like it.

Katie: What things are hidden in this picture?

Joanna: A shark, and a treasure chest.

Katie: Why did you decide to use pencil crayon for the background?

Joanna: Because if I used sharpie it would go through, it wouldn’t look nice. - it’s a bit too dark. I wanted to be able to see the fishes.

Katie: Do you prefer sharpie or pencil crayon, or does it not matter?

Joanna: No preference.

Katie: If you had to pick an artist name, what would it be?

Joanna: Jojo Bean the Great.

Katie: Is there anyone that you would like to dedicate this to?

Joanna: No.

Katie: Is there anyone you attribute your success to?

Joanna: Carolyn, because she encouraged me to do it.

Katie: Tell me about the bears…

Joanna: Let me look, I like this picture because … I decided to make it many colours because I didn’t know what colour to do them. I decided to do something imaginative that wouldn’t exist. So I decided to do a doughnut bear which turned out pretty good. I did it in the middle so everyone could see it. I did an icecream bear because it I like icecream. I did the bean bear because my name is ‘Jojo Bean’. The rainbow bear is because I wanted all the colours I used together into a rainbow.

Take care,

Katie

Scoring Goals and Tracking Stats: A Fantasy Hockey Blog

Hey OSC families!

Over the past few years, I have become very interested and consumed by participating in fantasy sports leagues. Every year I join fantasy football, basketball, and hockey leagues with a few of my friends, and it is something that I find really fun! Basically how it works is that everybody drafts individual athletes based on their strengths and abilities. There are a certain amount of positions you would need to draft to create your final team. For example, if you were drafting fantasy hockey team, you would need to choose a couple forwards, defensemen and goalies.

Given how much fun I’ve had doing this with my friends, I decided to start a league here at OSC. Four boys joined our fantasy hockey league, and they drafted their very own teams made up of different NHL players. Different point amounts are given for different statistics, and that helped determine a strategy that each kid had when drafting their team. For example, two points are given for each goal scored, so Nathan was quick to choose Patrick Kane, a notorious goal scorer. Points are also given for assists, so Bryce drafted Tyler Seguin who is known to be a “pass-first” player. Felipe and Liam both drafted excellent goaltenders that are helping their teams.

We calculated all the points, and with the NHL season nearly halfway finished, here are our standings:

Liam’s Team: 537 points
Felipe’s Team: 498 points
Ryan’s Team: 466 points
Nathan’s Team:  452 points
Bryce’s Team: 436 points

The boys are having a lot of fun and I hope it gives them a different perspective on enjoying and watching professional sports!

Happy Holidays,

Ryan

'Tis the Season

'Tis the season;

It’s that time of year where the lights go up...

The tree comes out...

And the holiday themed art projects get under way...

On Thursday, December 3rd, Gemma led an awesome art activity that really got the festive spirit flowing. The children started by taking an empty ball ornament and filling it with small ‘snowballs’ and glitter. The results were super cool and some of them even ended up on the tree here at OSC.

We look forward to all of the great holiday activities soon to come our way and our Winter Break Camp which will be loads of fun!

Happy Holidays,

Matt :)

Winter in Looming

Winter is approaching but with the recent low temperatures you would think that it has already arrived. It feels just like just yesterday that we were running around outside in our shorts and t-shirts, but lately it’s been way too cold to be outside without being all bundled up in our winter gear.

We here at SR. OSC, and some friends over at JR, have been working on a very special project. We have renamed this month 'LOOMVEMBER' and have been looming toques and scarves that will be put into care packages for women and children in need.

In the coldness of the winter, a nice toque or scarf can be so beneficial in our fight to stay warm. For many of us, myself included, this has been our first time looming but everyone has quickly picked it up in no time. Learning new things and doing art activities is always fun but when you know that you are doing something that will help someone else, it makes the activity that much more meaningful.

So far here at SR we have completed 15 toques & 1 scarf. The kids have really enjoyed being able to pick their own colours as well as the size e.g. a baby, kid or adult-sized toque or scarf. It’s always exciting when a scarf or toque has been completed and we can’t wait to see how many we will have finished by the time of the donation.

Keep on looming everyone,

Erin

Halloween Week

It was Halloween week at Senior OSC and things were getting spooky. There were spider webs on the walls, ghoulish creatures hanging from the ceiling and most frightening of all, the room down the hall had rumors of being haunted.

Finally, it was the day before Halloween and everyone looked amazing in their costumes. The rumors of the haunted room had spread over to the junior program and many of the juniors were excited to see what the haunted room had in store.

Cole, Adrian and Alden were holding tours but no one had seen Tyler, Felipe, Bryce, Liam or Rhyann all day.  They had been the first to discover the haunted room. It was all very peculiar.

In the tour, you had the choice to have the lights on or off.  Lights off was not for the faint of heart.  Throughout the tour you heard creepy music, saw glow in the dark paint and followed a red flashlight. Every now and again you would sense someone lurking behind you, and distant screams would send chills down your spine.  Luckily, if you needed to, there was a safe word you could say to end the haunted house if things got too spooky.

Meanwhile there were some great crafts taking place in in the Multi.  Ryan led a marshmallow pop activity, making scary but tasty treats and Brianna led festive crafts that encouraged spooky creativity.

Senior OSC had a wonderful Halloween week and we hope that everyone had a fun and safe Halloween.

Until next time,

Emily
